Green Coffee Bean Extract & Weight Loss:

Green coffee bean extract is the supplement extracted from the unroasted seeds of Coffea fruits, which has seen a rise in popularity as a weight loss supplement.

A 2013 study led by Joe Vinson and Bryan Burnham of  the University of Scranton and published in Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity: Targets and Therapy found that green coffee beans had an effect on fat cells which could help people lose weight, but this was due to chlorogenic acid (CGA) content that can be lost during cooking.

The participants were given 400mg capsules containing high CGA (HCG) or low CGA (LCG) extracts for 12 weeks; those taking HCG lost 66% more weight than those taking LC G.

Green Coffee Bean Extract & Blood Sugar:

In 2016, Vinson and Burnham’s study was repeated by a team from Saudi Arabia in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (showed that supplementation with green coffee bean extract can reduce blood sugar levels in obese people with prediabetes).

The 50 participants were given either placebo or 400mg of green coffee bean extract per day for 24 weeks; at week 12, there was a 33% reduction in fasting blood glucose levels among those taking the green coffee beans, while no significant changes occurred during this time among those taking placebo.

Green Coffee Bean Extract & Blood Pressure:

Due to its high chlorogenic acid content, green coffee has also been shown to lower systolic blood pressure, according to a study published in the journal Nutrition.

Dr. Joe Vinson stated that “men who took 400mg of green coffee bean extract experienced up to a five-point decrease in diastolic blood pressure.

Green Coffee Bean Extract & Anti-Ageing:

A group of Italian researchers led by Bruno Arujo revealed in 2005 that chlorogenic acid can prevent ultraviolet radiation damage to skin cells in vitro (study performed on organisms outside their normal environment), meaning that it has anti-ageing properties when applied topically or ingested orally.

Green coffee beans are an excellent source of CGA, which is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) conducted a study on the green coffee bean extract industry and found that many of the products tested did not contain levels of CGA described on their labels, nor did they contain any amounts of chlorogenic acid at all!

Coffee cherries are the berries of the Coffea plant, which contain the coffee seeds (commonly referred to as coffee beans), and are produced by several species of evergreen shrubs which are cultivated in over 70 countries around the world. The most commonly grown and highest regarded species is Coffea arabica. Once ripe, the red or purple coffee berries are picked and dried. The seeds are then roasted to varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor, before being ground and brewed to create coffee.

Coffee consumption has been associated with lower risk of death. That risk reduction applied to what epidemiologists call “all-cause mortality,” that is, coffee drinking was associated with a markedly lower risk of dying for any reason at all. The survival association with coffee drinking and death applied to the risk of dying from specific diseases, including heart and lung disease, stroke, diabetes, and infections. It even applied to the risk of dying from injuries and accidents.

Rich in polyphenols, coffee contains over 1,000 different natural compounds that favorably interact within cells. Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants but polyphenols have other, more complex action, including the surprising ability to possibly modulate gene expression, regulating how much and how often a particular gene is “switched on”. That means that polyphenols regulate many of a cell’s most fundamental processes, including signaling that tells cells when to die, when to replicate, when to release or respond to other chemical signals, and so on. That means coffee may have the ability to turn on genes that promote youthful cellular functions.

The net effects of this impact on cellular signaling may include improvements in tissue repair, immunity, and the body’s ability to maintain itself in a steady state, called homeostasis. Impaired cellular signaling has been implicated in causing cancer, type 2 diabetes, and the risks for heart disease and stroke.

Coffee’s chlorogenic acid can cut the after-meal glucose surge that’s known to increase cardiovascular risks in people with diabetes. Other components in coffee may enhance this effect by reducing carbohydrate storage and maybe even improving insulin sensitivity.
