Warm-Up

It’s all good if you don’t know the answers. You will get another shot at this quiz later in the lesson.

Try again and don’t worry…today’s lesson will clear this up.

Step 2 of 6

inSANE

Carrot Cake is a Good Source of Vegetables & Just Because a Food Contains Some Protein Does Not Mean it is a Good Source of Protein

Listen

Note 1

When considering protein options, keep in mind that just because a food has some protein in it does not qualify it as a useful source of protein.

Note 2

A food is a “protein” if it has more calories coming from protein than from fat or carbohydrates, and whose protein can be readily used by the body.

Note 3

Concentrated Sources of Protein: seafood: 51% to 94% protein, egg whites: 91%, white meat with or without skin: 51% to 80% protein, dark meat without skin: ~60% protein, low-fat cottage cheese: 60% to 85% protein, low-fat plain Greek yogurt: 60% to 70% protein, lean (ideally grass-fed) red meat: 51% to 75% protein, low-sugar casein or whey protein powder: >70% protein.

Step 3 of 6

SANE

High-Quality Protein = High-Quality Health & Protein Progress, Not Protein Perfection

Listen

Note 1

Low-fat dairy and lean meats are more concentrated sources of protein, but that does not at all mean that SANE fats should be avoided.

Note 2

SANE eating is as beneficial for vegans as it is for omnivores. Remember, SANE is a guide, not a MUST-DO-EXACTLY-THIS-OR-ELSE fad diet.

Note 3

Consider mollusks (animals without a central nervous system like clams, oysters, scallops and mussels) rice, pea, and hemp low-sugar protein powders, and branch chain amino acid (BCAA) supplements if meat, fish, and dairy are not compatible with you lifestyle.

Step 4 of 6

Quiz

Remember these? Give them one more try now that you’ve spent a few minutes going SANE.

Q1

Humanely raised meat is the best source of Nutrient-Dense Protein.

Try again.

Correct! Seafood (ideally sustainably and humanely caught) is the preferred source of Nutrient-Dense Protein when going SANE. Unless you are going to eat organ meats from grass-fed or free-range meat, seafood or any other source of Nutrient-Dense Protein is just as useful as meat.

Q2

Eggs, beans, quinoa, and nuts are key low-cost sources of Nutrient-Dense Protein.

Try again.

Correct! These foods get a small fraction of their calories from protein. They are “good sources of protein” like carrot cake is a “good source of vegetables.”

Q3

It is very easy to enjoy a SANE approach to protein as a vegetarian.

Correct! It can be more of a challenge for vegans, but low-sugar plant-based protein powders and branch chain amino acid (BCAA) supplements can help simplify.

Try again.

Step 5 of 6

Support

The number of people keeping you accountable is your #1 predictor of long-term success.

Sharing your SANEity enables you to enjoy instant accountability and support from your social networks. The science is 100% clear: The more you share your SANEity, the more success you will enjoy.
