Calorie-Quality Factor 4: Efficiency

Step 1 of 6

Warm-Up

It’s all good if you don’t know the answers. You will get another shot at this quiz later in the lesson.

Q1

The number of calories in a food tells us how much energy it provides.

True

Try again and don’t worry…today’s lesson will clear this up.

False

Correct! You are about to learn exactly why.

Q2

The three primary sources of fuel for your body are known as macronutrients, and are classified as carbohydrate, protein, and fat.

True

Correct! You are about to learn exactly why.

False

Try again and don’t worry…today’s lesson will clear this up.

Q3

In terms of how much energy it provides us, a calorie IS a calorie.

True

Try again and don’t worry…today’s lesson will clear this up.

False

Correct! You are about to learn exactly why.

Step 2 of 6

Calorie Counts Tell You How Much Energy Is In A food & Quality of Calories Matters Just As Much As Quantity

Listen

Note 1

A calorie is NOT a calorie when it comes to how Efficiently your metabolism converts it into energy and stored energy (aka body fat).

Note 2

Carbohydrates in the form of fiber are completely inEfficient. They cannot be used as energy. Protein is very inEfficient as it cannot be used as energy. Only after your liver converts excess protein into sugar can that sugar be used as energy.

Note 3

SANE whole foods rich in fiber and protein are inEfficient and help you feel full while empowering your body to burn stored body fat for energy.

Step 3 of 6

SANE

Eat inEfficient Foods to Effortlessly Burn Fat & Protein, Fiber, and Water to the Rescue…Again!

Listen

Note 1

If you have excess fat on your body, you already have all the energy inside your body to thrive.

Note 2

SANE Success comes from eating more inEfficient foods that provide essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins, as well as filling fiber to empower your body to fuel itself with calories already stored on your hips rather than telling you to take excessive calories in through your lips.

Note 3

Non-starchy vegetables and nutrient-dense proteins are the two least Efficient (good!) food groups. They are also the most helpful food groups in terms of Satiety and Nutrition. Therefore non-starchy vegetables and nutrient-dense proteins should be enjoyed every time you eat to maximize fat loss and health gains.

Step 4 of 6

Quiz

Remember these? Give them one more try now that you’ve spent a few minutes going SANE.

Q1

The number of calories in a food tells us how much energy it provides.

True

Try again.

False

Correct! The amount of calories in a food only tells us part of the story. To know how much energy a food provides, we also have to know whether those calories are coming from carbohydrates, proteins, and fats because these three sources of calories vary wildly in how Efficiently they are converted into energy by your body.

Q2

The three primary sources of fuel for your body are known as macronutrients, and are classified as carbohydrate, protein, and fat.

True

Correct! However, please keep in mind the following keys for each macronutrient. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that is completely inEfficient. It cannot be converted into usable energy by your body. Protein is very inEfficient. In fact, protein itself cannot be used as energy by the body. Excess protein is converted into sugar by your liver and then that sugar can be used as energy. Fat is the preferred source of energy for your body. That’s why your body stores energy as body fat. Remember that when you are unclogged and still carrying excess body fat, the majority of your energy will be coming from fat that is already in your body (aka burning stored body fat), versus additional fat that you are eating (aka eating whole food fats like nuts and seeds).

False

Try again.

Q3

In terms of how much energy it provides us, a calorie IS a calorie.

True

Try again.

False

Correct! Fat is your body’s preferred source of energy and is converted into energy up to three times more Efficiently than carbohydrate. Carbohydrate (aka sugar) is the other source of energy for your body. Protein is completely inEfficient. It cannot be used as energy. Protein must be converted into sugar and then sugar can be used as energy. Because of this protein is up to thirty times less Efficient than fat and up to ten times less Efficient than carbohydrate.

Step 5 of 6

Support

The number of people keeping you accountable is your #1 predictor of long-term success.
