Calorie Myth Book

Interviewer: New Year and a new set of resolutions and many will be focused on fitness as you know, but before you step foot into a gym, we are going to debunk some of the exercise myths that we have been sticking to. Joining us now is Jonathan Bailor author of The Calorie Myth and we are glad that you are here this morning.

Jonathan: Thank you so much. It is a pleasure to be here.

Interviewer: Happy New Year to you. So, I like this how to eat more, exercise less, lose weight and…

Jonathan: Live better.

Interviewer: Live better. Okay, so you are telling us that we have to do a lot of the things the other way. So, I want to go through myth by myth. Exercise myth number one, I can burn more fat if I exercise more. That’s a myth?

Jonathan: It’s a myth because exercise, just like eating, is about quality and when we exercise with higher quality or more resistance, we use more muscle fibers, we get tired faster and we have to exercise less, not because we are lazy, but simply because we are working our muscles more effectively.

Interviewer: So, you are saying that recovery process [indiscernible 00:50]. What about when you are on a treadmill and it says, Okay you are in fat burning mode after so many minutes?

Jonathan: There is no such thing as fat burning mode necessarily, and what we want to do is cause a fundamental change in our body rather than try to rip calories out of it.

Interviewer: Okay, cardio, is this a myth? Cardio is better for burning fat than resistance training.

Jonathan: It is absolutely a myth. Our body is great at burning fat if we can heal the underlying cause of obesity. Cardio does not do anything to heal the neurological and hormonal causes of obesity. Whereas, resistance training and interval training actually treat the cause.

Interviewer: So, they are actually getting in there and triggering what?

Jonathan: A hormonal change as well as actually reducing inflammation in your brain so that your appetite re-regulates and you only eat when you are actually hungry and you stop when you are actually full.

Interviewer: Interesting. Okay exercise myth number three. In resistance training, more is better. Why is that a myth?

Jonathan: It’s about, again, quality. So, you don’t want to go to the gym every single day. If you are going to the gym every single day that means you really must not be having an impact on your body because if you were, you would be too sore to go every day. If you can do the same exercise day after day after day, it must not be making a difference.

Interviewer: What if you are seeing results though and do a ton of cardio. Are you going to hit the wall, why you are not burning fat at that point?

Jonathan: You may be able to see results just taking less of your time at the gym. So, it’s not that you can’t see results by exercising a lot. It’s that if you exercise smarter, you may see even better results in even less time.

Interviewer: Okay, so that sounds good to just about everybody [indiscernible 02:22] you can eat more, you have to exercise less and it’s all going to benefit you long term. Excellent [indiscernible 02:27] good news, Jonathan. He is going to be back with us at 8:50 with some smart exercising.

Jonathan: Absolutely.

Interviewer: Thanks so much for being with us so early, we will see you later on.
